What is Alcoholism?
Alcoholism or Alcohol Dependence or Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic disease which involves uncontrolled drinking and preoccupation with alcohol. Many non-alcoholics wonder what causes drinkers to engage in consuming alcohol repetitively even after having a sound understanding of the innumerous physiological and psychological aspects of such a habit. How can you jump of a cliff even when you realise that it will result into certain death?
The Incessant Need for Escapism
Every alcoholic in the world would respond in unison with this, “The dire need of escapism is what triggers our desire for alcohol consumption.” Escapism is not a negative term. Infact an individual must experience escapism once in a while to ensure that life’s stress and worries do not get the better of you. Escapism is advisable as it aids in shifting your focus to an activity of your preference for a brief span of time before returning to the life’s hustle. When people resort to gaming, dancing or outdoor activities like trekking, working out, etc. – that is the kind of escapism which delivers positive impact. However, when escapism requires to reach out to a local bar or a wine shop, that’s when it becomes a problem.
Escapism is one of the main reasons behind everytime an alcoholic resorts to drinking. A person can have one of the million reasons to want to escape the reality which is in front of him ranging from workplace pressure, a trauma, hassles in personal life, emotional disturbances, loneliness and so on. It is also a fact that in order to escape from the psychological disorders one is going through, a person resorts to drinking. Such an approach is bound to develop an addiction towards alcohol.
Another immediate form of escapism is combining the effects of alcohol and drugs which intoxicates the user to such an extent that he can forget his endless list of worries for a temporary period whilst being under the influence. The matter of concern in this case is the next stage where the frequency of reaching out to alcohol and drugs rises beyond acceptable limits.
The Need of the Hour
The conclusion is that people addicted to alcohol are prone to indulge in escapism with the help of alcohol. These are the ones who cannot be easily convinced with the idea of escapism through reading, playing a sport, travelling, socialising. An alcoholic person would need his family and/or a specialist to bail him out of the vicious pit of addiction where momentary pleasure and relief takes over. It is noteworthy that a systematic approach is necessary to ensure a definite positive outcome to one’s addiction issues. Every alcoholic requires subjective medical treatment and care to be able to beat the demons of alcohol.
Life is known to throw curve balls every now and then. Believe it or not, nobody is an exception in that case. Everyone gets bogged down by life. Free meals exist only in fantasies, not reality. So face your share of life’s obstacles without the help of alcohol. There will not be any requirement of escaping reality when you encounter every problem with sheer grit and determination.
