Is hot toddy an Alcohol lovers’ easiest escape or can alcohol really heal and protect against cold and cough? On one side, many researchers argue over the possibility of healing by alcohol, and on the other, authors and purists point out the use of hot toddy as a recognised and widely accepted remedy for centuries. While scientific logic may lead us to perform research experiments to determine the influence of alcohol on a cold, common sense and experience may prompt us to take another route. Read on to find out more.

We may be in the middle of the worst flu infestation that mankind has ever brought down on themselves. The primary reason being we are on an endless journey to finding cure, and rightly so because every medicine we rely on, starts to make the bug tolerant against it. In simpler words, the medicines (especially vaccines and antibiotics) we consumer may alter the virus/ bacteria which may mutate them to cause other diseases, in turn, putting us out towards endless pharmaceutical research. Instead of wandering around medicine shops and spending money on medicines that promise to fight infections and boost immunity, people from across the world have looked at hot toddy as an ancient ritual that helps cope with cold infections.

The foremost reason for this school of thought being widely accepted is that there really is no medicine for prevention or treatment of cold. Unlike more serious diseases, cold is not easily attributed to a certain strain of pathogen. Many physicians consider symptomatic remedies for cold – which is to say that only the symptoms if soothed will provide relief to the patient. The physicians also agree that an effective remedy for cold is lots of sleep – and if you really go into the experience of hot toddy, you’d know it makes you warm and sleepy that feels so comforting when your own with a cold.

Lovers of hot toddy claim whiskey to be a great decongestant – they say alcohol is capable of dilating blood vessels that make it easier for the patients’ mucous membranes to deal with the infection. The recipe includes infused essences of hot spices and ingredients that are inherently soothing to the throat. For instance, hot toddy is often combined with honey, lime, cinnamon and even ginger to help clear the cold symptoms. One glass of hot toddy is sufficient to help symptoms of cold and by the time the drink gets over, most patients report clearing of breathing passages and an overall improved sense of wellness. However, one must remember the ill effects of overconsumption, which may make the symptoms worse. It is advisable to sleep as soon as you start feeling groggy.

Here’s an easy recipe for Hot Toddy –

  • 8oz Hot Water
  • 1 Bag Herbal Tea
  • 1oz Bourbon
  • 1 Tablespoon Honey
  • 1 Lemon Wedge

Always remember to keep clear off excessive drinking, especially if you’re in ill health. Drinking is enjoyed only when it is done responsibly!
